Atomic Cannon is a military battle simulator for your Pocket PC (a Windows version is also available). You control one tank, while the computer controls the other. You can pick from over 50 weapons to throw at the opponent. Want to take out some frustration at work? Load up this little game and give it a shot. It doesn’t take long to go through a game, but you’ll feel better afterwards. Sounds easy? Well… it takes time to master all the options. You have to determine the power behind your shot, the angle and the type of weapon. You can move your tank to get a better shot. Right after your shot, it’s the computers turn. Watch out… he seems to have a better aim than you.
The game has had 106 improvements since version 1.0. It works on
Color ARM, X-Scale and MIPS processors (sorry SH3 owners). There is
a sound problem with the 2003 OS, but that may not be game related.
It appears other programs have the same issues. They are working on
fixing that issue.
Right now if you buy the Pocket PC version, you will also receive the desktop version free. The game takes less than 2 Meg of RAM on the Pocket PC for the full version (less than 1 Meg for the demo).
Okay… starting a game is simple. Select the number of humans or computers, how many tanks and even the style of the game. You have the option of rounds or death match. There is also an option for land size (up to 4 screens wide) for a huge area of mass destruction. Up to 10 levels can be selected from easiest, easy, moderate, hard, very hard, mastery and elite. The default is moderate. Need to add more to the game, adjust the wind speed. This will affect how the weapons act in the air. Once the options are set, click START and off we go. You will be shown the area with a tank on each end of the screen. Select the weapon, power, angle, position and then click FIRE. If everything is set right, you’ll do a lot of damage to the opponent. The score appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen. It sounds easy, but it’s not as easy as you’d think. You’ve got to have the angle and power just right or it will fly right over the tank.
Take out a little frustration during a break at work. Think of your
boss being in the other tank when you let loose the weapons of mass
destruction! You might want to turn down the sound first, or your
co-workers may question your sanity.
The game sells for $19.95 (but remember you get two version of the game (both the Pocket PC version AND the Windows version). That’s not a bad deal for two programs.
Okay… I know you’ll ask…. What about network support? The programmer told me he’s working on that for the next release. I assume he’s talking about supporting Bluetooth and hopefully WLAN support. It could be interesting with IR support as well, but might be tough to keep both devices lined up all the time (since it’s a game you play holding sideways). I can see a good multiplayer session going on using Bluetooth or WLAN connections. The game will support multiple players now.
It you want to see something cool…. Change the number of humans to zero and set the number of computers up to 6 or 7. Change the difficulty level and wind. Start the game and watch them blow each other up. It’s a real blast to watch. Once the game is over, you’ll get a stat screen showing the ratings for each of the players. It’s a cool game. Download a trial version or the full copy and check it out! The game was reviewed on
